The animals of Mana Pools need an early Xmas present

Writer's picture: Johnny ZeederbergJohnny Zeederberg

The drought in the Zambezi valley is reaching climatic proportions. There is now a heat wave pressing the ellies and other heribivores to the edge of survival and in many cases, over the edge. There is no food left, the vegetation that has lasted this long has now been eaten by the starving herds of elephant, buffalo, and other herds of herbivores that populate Mana Pools.

In better times, this is the Garden of Eden, on the banks of the mighty Zambezi River, but now it is bone dry and every shade of brown, black and bone. The predators are not able to keep up with the numbers of animals that are giving up the ghost. With each new setting of the flaming red sun, the weakest cease to survive.

In these harsh conditions, elephant mothers will continue to nuture their babies, scarificing themselves to the point where they finally succumb and collapse, leaving their baby calves to face the predators alone.

As always, there is hope, a group of people who know and love Mana and it's animals, have launched a project to transport in truck loads of baled grass to feed the herds. This relief food will only be needed until the rains come, in hopefully, a month from now. Weather predictions are that the rains are coming and this crushing heat wave will end soon and the long drought will be over.

In the meantime,

it is critical that we can keep the trucks of grass coming into Mana Pools so that the remaining animals can hold out until the rains fall.

They are calling the project FEEDMANA and it is managed by VAWZ, please look here

Of course, this comes down to money, a currency not known to nature, but to all of us.

IF YOU FEEL YOU CAN HELP WITH SOME MONEY please click on or copy and paste

Alternatively, you can buy some Zimbabaloobas and we will be donating a % of each sale between now and Christmas to FEEDMANA. It's not only Santa's reindeer that need topping up !
